Over 150 delegates attended the “CIArb-WIPO-SIAC Intellectual Property, Media & Technology Arbitration Symposium 2014” held on 13 - 14 March 2014 at Marina Bay Sands, Singapore to discuss key challenges, risks and innovative solutions in relation to this fast-moving and ever-changing sector. Co-organised by The Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (Singapore Branch), the WIPO Arbitration and Mediation Center and the Singapore International Arbitration Centre, the Symposium featured various distinguished panels of leading IP, arbitration and ADR experts and business leaders from around the world.
The Symposium began with welcome addresses from Mr Richard Tan, Chairman of CIArb (Singapore Branch), Mr Jonathan Choo, Honorary Secretary of SIArb (Singapore Branch), Mr Ignacio de Castro from Switzerland, Deputy Director of WIPO Arbitration and Mediation Center, and Ms Lim Seok Hui, CEO of SIAC. This was followed by a Keynote Speech on “The Role of Intellectual Property and Technology in Global Commerce and the Strategic Importance of Effective Dispute Avoidance and Resolution” by the Guest of Honour, Ms Indranee Rajah, Senior Minister of State for Law & Education.
In line with the Symposium’s theme on “Innovation Under the Global Spotlight: Overcoming Challenges, Changing Mindset”, hot topics such as the special characteristics of IP arbitration, global trends in dispute resolution and the role of institutional arbitration, were debated at length during panel discussions. Arbitration techniques and practices were also explored in-depth through a half-day arbitration surgery workshop.
